[Written 5/19/08] In 1996 I was doing a lot of backpacking. Living so close to the Appalachian Trail, and having done small stretches of it in Virginia and North Carolina, I was pretty much enthralled by it. I wondered if I could do the 3-5 month trek of 2175 miles. I also wondered if I could handle the solitude. So I decided to push myself and do a 100 mile stretch of the AT--the entirety of Shenandoah National Park.
